Section III Friends of Wrestling to Host Media Day for Wrestlers Participating in ‘Journeymen/Rudis NYS Wrestling Championships’

Section 3 Friends of Wrestling announced they will be hosting a ‘Media Day’ for all wrestlers heading to the ‘Journeymen/Rudis NYS Wrestling Championships‘ in Manheim, Pennsylvania on April 2nd-3rd, 2021.

“Each year the Friends of Section 3 Wrestling holds a banquet and media day for the NYSPHAA qualifiers, and with it being canceled this year, we wanted to offer the kids something after they have already lost so much,” a post by WEBMSTR on the cnywrestling.com said.

Each wrestler who attends the ‘media day’ will be given a pair of Section 3 colored (Blue and Yellow) fight shorts and a Blue and Yellow singlet. According to the post on cnywrestling.com, “The singlets are the old school Section 3 singlets that we replaced with the new style a few years back. They were purchased from the section by a club and now have been donated back for this use.”

The post reads that cnywrestling.com will also be taking pictures of each wrestler as well as interviewing some of the attendees.

The event is being held on March 28th from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. at Great Lakes Fitness and Athletics facility and is not a Section 3 event. Any wrestler who plans on attending the unofficial NYS Wrestling Championships is encouraged to attend but is not obligated to be present.

A list of Section III wrestlers planning to attend unofficial NYS Wrestling Championships can be found HERE.

Journeymen Coach Planning ‘Journeymen/Rudis NYS Wrestling Championships’ Tournament in Pennsylvania

With COVID-19 ravaging high school sports throughout New York and USA, Journeymen Wrestling Club’s Frank Popolizio has been hard at work, creating a temporary solution for high school wrestlers.

Popolizio took matters into his own hands and planned a two-day makeshift state championship tournament scheduled for early April.

“We were able to host an event in November that met all the requirements and protocols,” Popolizio told The Daily Gazette in December. The Journeymen Adidas Fall Classic was held Nov. 21-22 at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, Pennsylvania. “This event is months away. [By April], I am pretty sure we’ll be back to pre-surge numbers.”

“I have a plan,” Popolizio said. “Having a plan is only a portion of the battle. If the plan takes a curve, we’ll adjust.”

The event will be limited to 450 competitors from 13 sections (Section I,II,III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, VI, PSAL, and C) in New York State. The tournament is a single-division competition, meaning D-1 (large school) and D-2 (small school) competitors will participate in the same bracket for a single New York State Champion.

Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 protocols will be in affect for this event. This is not a NYSPHSAA event and is in no way connected.

You may view the event flyer HERE.
