With COVID-19 ravaging high school sports throughout New York and USA, Journeymen Wrestling Club’s Frank Popolizio has been hard at work, creating a temporary solution for high school wrestlers.
Popolizio took matters into his own hands and planned a two-day makeshift state championship tournament scheduled for early April.
“We were able to host an event in November that met all the requirements and protocols,” Popolizio told The Daily Gazette in December. The Journeymen Adidas Fall Classic was held Nov. 21-22 at Spooky Nook Sports in Manheim, Pennsylvania. “This event is months away. [By April], I am pretty sure we’ll be back to pre-surge numbers.”
“I have a plan,” Popolizio said. “Having a plan is only a portion of the battle. If the plan takes a curve, we’ll adjust.”
The event will be limited to 450 competitors from 13 sections (Section I,II,III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, VI, PSAL, and C) in New York State. The tournament is a single-division competition, meaning D-1 (large school) and D-2 (small school) competitors will participate in the same bracket for a single New York State Champion.
Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 protocols will be in affect for this event. This is not a NYSPHSAA event and is in no way connected.
